Finding a neighborhood for practice

City view from harbor

In Issue 1, we discussed the process of finding a city in which to locate. In this issue, we’ll look at the next step: evaluating neighborhoods within that city.

Let’s say you have a long weekend holiday and you decide to visit an area where you might want to practice. How do you get the most information in a short amount of time? You should use the trip for two main purposes:

Inside this Issue

1. To find an area of the city where you want to live, and

2. To find an area of the city where you want to practice. You may decide to live and practice in the same area, or in different areas.

To prepare for the visit, contact the local chamber of commerce (get the phone number by searching online for the city name and “chamber of commerce”). Find out as much as you can about:

• Schools, colleges, universities
• Healthcare institutions
• Largest employers

If you can talk to someone at the chamber before you go, ask where the greatest growth is happening (what neighborhoods).

Country Side ImageAlso before you visit, contact a local commercial realtor and see if he or she will spend some time driving around with you. Spending time with the realtor will enable you to see more areas of the city than you might be able to see on your own, and to determine your compatibility with this realtor.

When you get to the city, spend some time driving around by yourself. If you are in an area you like, find a place to have coffee or lunch. Talk to people. Ask about local chiropractors. Use these discussions to get a sense of how receptive people are to chiropractic.
