The life coaching industry is “hot”
right now, and many people are finding that a coach can be a powerful
asset in their journey.
A
coach can help you succeed, but you need to pick the right coach.
What you are looking for is a positive,
enthusiastic person who can be:
- An impartial sounding board for your
ideas and thoughts;
- A model of positive energy and enthusiasm;
- An encourager when the road to practice
gets bumpy;
- A motivator who will help you set goals,
congratulating you when you achieve them and holding you accountable
when you don’t.
This person might be:
- A student who is further along in chiropractic
college;
- An instructor who is willing to spend
time talking;
- An experienced chiropractor or health
care provider.
However, if you prefer to hire a professional
coach, here are some things you should look for:
1. Certification/accreditation.
Anyone can hang out a shingle and use the term “coach,”
but to find the highest quality coaches, look for those who are
certified by a national coaching organization such as “Coach
U” or the International Coaching Federation.
2. Specialty. Look
for a coach who specializes in helping with the startup of professional
practices.
3. Experience.
A more experienced coach, particularly one who has experience
in your area, will help you get started faster.
4. ‘Fit.’
Once you’ve determined that you want someone who is experienced
in coaching small business startups, you can narrow down your
search by interviewing. Since there are many coaches out there,
look for someone you immediately feel comfortable with and who
will motivate you to reach higher and do better.
Once you have found a coach, set a weekly
appointment to meet in person or by phone, and talk about your
goals and the next steps in your journey toward practice. Make
these meetings a priority throughout your college life; take seriously
the continuing goal-setting process, and you’ll find that
you have made significant progress toward practice startup by
the time you reach graduation.
