Starting into practice in Canada |
Much information on studentDC.com applies to all chiropractic students and graduates, but it is heavily weighed to U.S. sites and situations. We would like to start broadening the scope of information we provide for other countries. For Canadians, there are some resources you should check as you consider starting your practice:
About.com has a section on Starting a Business: Canada: http://sbinfocanada.about.com/cs/startup/a/startingsteps.htm. They even have specific information on how to register a business in each province: http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/bizregistration/a/businessreghub.htm
And they explain the four forms of business in Canada: the sole proprietorship, the partnership, the corporation, and the cooperative, with advantages and disadvantages of each: http://sbinfocanada.about.com/od/formsofbusinessownership/a/formbusinesshub.htm
If you want to check to see if a corporation name has already been chosen, try Industry Canada’s corporate name search: www.nuans.com/nuansinfo_en/home-accueil_en.htm
Industry Canada also provides information on setting up your corporation in Canada: www.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/cd-dgc.nsf/en/home.
The Small Business Financing Program is your source for information about obtaining a small business loan in Canada: http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/csbfp-pfpec.nsf/en/la00049e.html
The Canadian government has a Web site with lots of good assistance, including an Interactive Business Planner, which leads you through the process of writing your business plan, including FAQ’s, templates, and financial worksheets: : www.canadabusiness.ca/ibp/en/index.cfm
The Bank of Canada’s Web site does something similar on its “Starting a Business” Web site: www.bdc.ca/en/my_project/Projects/starting_business.htm. They have a free Excel worksheet to use in creating financial projections.
CanadaOne, an Internet business “channel,” has some great articles and resources on its Business Tools Web site: www.canadaone.com/tools/. Check out their Guide to Starting a Business in Canada, with information on setting up your business form, paying taxes, and preparing a business plan. They also have an online magazine and include Canadian specific business resources.
The Canada Revenue Agency, like the IRS in the US, has information about payroll and excise taxes, forms, tax rates, and recordkeeping requirements. Its business Web site is at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/business/menu-e.html.
ZipLocal, www.ziplocal.com, is a business directory that connects businesses and customers through a user-defined interface. Its database contains more than 1 million Canadian businesses and attracts on average more than 1 million visitors per month. Your potential clients can find you by searching for chiropractors in their zip code area.
You might also want to check out Enterprise Magazine, a Canadian small business magazine. They don’t have much content on the Internet; it looks like you have to sign in or subscribe to get past issues. www.enterprisemag.com/resourceslinks.html
